Overview

The Department of Distance Education (DDE) delivers Intermediate Level Education (ILE) to officers who are unable to attend the resident Command and General Staff Officer Course (CGSOC) at Fort Leavenworth. DDE provides a non-resident option that mirrors the academic rigor and learning outcomes of the resident program.

The DDE program is structured around two major components: the ILE Common Core (CC) and the Advanced Operations Course (AOC). Students complete both components to satisfy ILE requirements and earn Military Education Level 4 (MEL 4).

Subjects Covered

  • Foundations of leadership and the Army Profession
  • Operational art and operational-level thinking
  • Joint, interagency, intergovernmental, and multinational operations
  • Force management and organizational leadership
  • Army and joint planning processes
  • Mission command in complex environments
  • Applied planning exercises and written assessments
  • Historical case studies and applied lessons learned

Eligibility

Eligibility, enrollment, and scheduling are managed through Army training systems and official Command and General Staff School (CGSS) channels. DDE serves officers from the Active Component, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites and eligibility criteria are defined in ATRRS and official CGSS/DDE guidance. Students must complete the ILE Common Core prior to enrolling in the Advanced Operations Course.
